America's first, most famous, and controversial headshop opened its doors at 1535 Haight Street in San Francisco on January 3, 1966. Its founders, brothers Ron and Jay Thelin, desired to create a place and environment where people could connect freely, expand their consciousness, and search for spiritual awakening. Cultural historian David McNally called The Psychedelic Shop "The linchpin to the world's first psychedelic neighborhood." It was the last great dream of the 1960s counterculture and represented a new revolution, liberation, and future, far away from the repressed and limited existence of the old American society.
The Psychedelic Shop logo is an officially filed, pending trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) by this museum. Serial Number 98344824.
